Football: Flowery Branch shuts out St. Pius

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Flowery Branch defense shut down St. Pius Friday night, forcing five turnovers as the Falcons earned a 9-0 win.

The Falcons recovered an onside kick and forced four fumbles, one in each quarter, to hold the option offense of St. Pius to just 131 yards on the ground on the night.

Flowery Branch got on the board with 9:15 to play in the first quarter as Marco Velasquez hit a 47-yard field goal to open the scoring. After both defenses held for most of the first half, Myles Ivey found the endzone from nine yards out with 2:24 to play until halftime to get the 9-0 lead.

Both defenses stood strong in the second half as the two offenses combined for just 63 yards in the third quarter and 43 in the fourth.

Malik Dryden led all rushers with 74 yards on 15 carries, while Ivey had 69 yards on 21 touches.

The Falcons will hit the road to Toccoa next week to battle Stephens County.
