College football: Rabun County's Stockton getting high praise from Smart

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

ATHENS, Ga. — It's not often you hear any college head football coach talk about the scout team quarterback in a weekly presser.

When it happens, everyone starts to wonder just how good is the scout team QB.

It just so happens Georgia's scout team signal caller is Rabun County's Gunner Stockton. He's fourth on the depth chart behind some talented QBs, including Heisman Trophy candidate Stetson Bennett, Carson Beck and Brock Vandiver.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Stockton has a lot of "poise, great-arm talent.

"He's probably played since being on the scout team. He hasn't had to deal with information overload," Smart said. "A lot of times, you find out a lot about a guy on the scout team because he is looking at a card. There's no thought process. There's no, 'I have to say this, I have to do this.' You take the robot out, and you play. He's played well on the scout team. A lot of the kids who came over there, there's no pressure because you are not in trouble if you mess up. It's the same way when you play defensive guys on the scout team. You look at your card, and a lot of times, you play faster."

Top-ranked Georgia will play host to Kent State on Saturday at Sanford Stadium. Kick-off is set for noon on SECN+ and ESPN+.
