Basketball: Branch girls extend win streak; Jackson Co. boys get 1st win of the season

HOSCHTON, Ga. — The Flowery Branch girls won their third straight game while the Jackson County boys picked up their first win of the season on Monday at the Jackson County gym.

The Lady Falcons took a wire-to-wire 55-49 win over the Lady Panthers while the Jackson County boys won a back-and-forth game, 66-62, in the second game. 

In the boys game, Jackson County used a 21-17 first quarter to to take a slim lead and then held on down the stretch. The two teams matched scores the rest of the way with each team scoring 14 points in the second quarter, 17 points in the third quarter, and 14 points in the final period. Both teams also drained 8 3-pointers for the game.

The Panthers (1-3) were led by 23 points from Brice Rogers. Jacob Lee added 11 points and RJ Knapp had 10 points for Jackson County.

It was the fifth straight loss for Flowery Branch (1-6) despite getting a game-high 25 points from Jeremiah Ware. Landon Mealor knocked down four 3-pointers as part of his 16 points for the Falcons. 

The Branch girls (3-3) opened the game with an 18-6 run to take early control. The Lady Panthers closed to within 27-20 by halftime with a 14-9 spurt but Branch used an 18-10 third quarter run for a 45-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Jess Tamlin and Amiya Scott each scored 14 points to lead Flowery Branch. Jayla Gudz added 11 points and Mackenzie White 10 for the Lady Falcons.

Flowery Branch next will travel to Athens on Friday to open Region 8-5A play for both teams.

Jackson County heads to Franklin County on Tuesday.
