Gwinnett police hosting fundraiser for injured officer

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

The Gwinnett County Police Foundation will host a fundraiser this weekend for an officer who was injured in a vehicle accident earlier this year.

In a release, the Gwinnett County Police Department announced that the fundraiser will be on Saturday, December 16 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Wild Wing Cafe on Braselton Highway in Dacula. Authorities will be raising funds for Officer Daniel Ortega, who officials say suffered severe leg and foot injuries in the accident on August 9.

Officials said Ortega was driving on Breckinridge Boulevard near Duluth in his patrol car when an oncoming silver sedan drove into Ortega's lane and the two collided. Ortega had to be cut out of the vehicle by first responders and underwent extensive surgery followed by months of physical therapy.

Police officials said Ortega has not been able to return to work and is married with a young daughter.

All donations collected at Saturday's fundraiser will reportedly go towards helping Ortega and his family. Anyone not able to attend can donate online on the Gwinnett County Police Foundation's website.
