Habersham County's Extension Office says it will offer free tax assistance to county residents ahead of the upcoming tax season.
According to a press release from Habersham County, IRS-certified preparers can prepare federal and state tax returns free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
VITA is designed to help qualified taxpayers and ensure that seniors, limited-income families and others receive every available tax benefit.
The process consists of two appointments. At the first appointment, the taxpayer(s) will meet with the tax preparer and give them all the documentation and information needed to prepare the tax return. About a week later, the taxpayer(s) will return for their second appointment at which the return will be reviewed, signed and filed.
Appointments will begin on February 1.
Appointments can be scheduled starting Jan. 2, 2024, by calling (706) 677-6230 or by emailing [email protected].
There are limits to the types of returns that can be prepared through VITA. Those hoping to use the program should call ahead of time to confirm whether their return falls under the program.
