Baseball: Gainesville survives slugfest with Chestatee

By AccessWDUN Staff

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Gainesville took advantage of a big second inning and six Chestatee errors to hold on for an 18-14 win in a slugfest at the Lynn Cottrell Complex on Monday.

However, it was Chestatee (1-1) that got off to the quick start scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. The War Eagles could not hold it.

The Red Elephants (1-1) answered with nine runs in the top of the second getting six hits, three walks, and one big error. Cooper Reid provided the big blow with a bases-clearing double to cap the inning.

After Chestatee cut it to 9-5 in the third, Gainesville pushed the lead to 17-5 with a seven-run fifth, scoring all seven runs with two outs and getting help from four War Eagles errors.

Facing the run-rule, Chestatee scored five times in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game alive. The War Eagles then scored one more in the sixth and three in the seventh and had the tying run at the plate but could not complete the huge comeback.

Gainesville next will play host to Oconee County at Ivey-Watson on Wednesday.

Chestatee will take on White County and Lakeside-Atlanta on Saturday at White County.
