Gainesville saw a slight drop in its unemployment rate in February according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
State Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Gainesville's unemployment rate was down one-tenth of a percent in February to 2.6%. The unemployment rate one year prior was 2.5%.
"Pro-growth policies that foster innovation and drive success are why Georgia remains the No. 1 state for business and a perennial powerhouse in talent development," Commissioner Bruce Thompson said. "Even with a slowing nationwide economy, communities across Georgia continue to thrive with low unemployment and high job growth."
The labor force increased in Gainesville by 359 and ended the month with an all-time high of 108,975. That was up 2,279 when compared to February 2022.
Gainesville ended February with 103,000 jobs. Job numbers increased by 300 from January to February. Job numbers increased by 4,500 when compared to February 2022.
"Historically, claims increase every January due to temporary seasonal manufacturing shutdowns and the retail sector shedding workers hired for the holiday season," the release reads. "In February, initial unemployment claims decreased by 38 percent in Gainesville, dropping back to normal levels. When you compare February 2023 claims to February 2022, claims were up by about 13 percent."
