Stephens County officers met with gunfire after ‘suspicious person’ complaint

By Christian Ashliman Anchor/Reporter

Units with the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Friday were met with 18 rounds of gunfire from an AR-15 rifle when they responded to complaints of a ‘suspicious person’ in Toccoa.

Complainants in the Valley Drive area of Toccoa called 911 and reported a male walking with a rifle. The man started firing a semi-automatic weapon at deputies once they arrived, hitting two police cruisers multiple times in the windshield and the driver's side of the vehicles.

One deputy was grazed by a shot. Deputies returned fire and the man fled the scene on foot, according to Stephens County officials.

The suspect threw his weapon into a wooded area while fleeing the scene and shed his clothing. He was later tracked by a Sheriff’s Office canine unit and taken into custody without further incident.

Upon canvasing the scene, officers found two magazines from what they say was an AR-15 rifle.

The shooting is currently being investigated.
