ATHENS — University of Georgia first baseman/outfielder Charlie Condon has been named the 2023 Collegiate Baseball Freshman Hitter of the Year as well as a Freshman All-American, the publication announced Wednesday.
Condon, a 6-6, 215-pound native of Marietta, Ga., joins a select group of Bulldogs who have been honored as a national award winner for their performance on the field in a season. Condon adds his name to the list that features outfielder Ron Wenrich (1985 Baseball America Freshman of the Year), two-way standout Derek Lilliquist (1987 Baseball America Pitcher of the Year), pitcher Joshua Fields (2008 NCBWA Stopper of the Year) and third baseman/pitcher Aaron Schunk (2019 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award).
He started all 56 games this season for the Bulldogs in 2023, leading the team in batting average (.386), home runs (25), runs (61) and RBI (67). He earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors in a vote of the league’s head coaches. He set the SEC freshman home run record and was selected second team All-SEC and Freshman All-SEC. He is the 32nd Bulldog to receive Freshman All-American honors and the first since Jaden Woods in 2021.
Condon has been named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy. Last week, he was named a second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
He has been invited to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team (CNT) summer training camp in Cary, N.C. to compete for a spot on the 26-man roster. He is scheduled to play in the Cape Cod Summer League for the Falmouth (Mass.) Commodores, opening the season June 10.
