College baseball: UGA's Condon gets top honor as a freshman

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia first baseman/outfielder Charlie Condon has been named the 2023 Baseball America Freshman of the Year and a First-Team Freshman All-American.
 
With the latest honor, Condon is the unanimous National Freshman of the Year, earning the award from Collegiate Baseball newspaper, D1 Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Baseball America. He is the second Bulldog to be awarded the Baseball America Freshman of the Year honor, joining Ron Wenrich in 1985.
 
The 6-foot-6, 215-pound native of Marietta, Ga., was also named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year and was a semifinalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy.
 
The finance major started all 56 games this season and ranked among SEC leaders in batting average (.386), home runs (25) and RBI (67). He set the SEC freshman home run record and led the conference in slugging percentage (.800).  
 
Condon was invited to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team (CNT) summer training program in Cary, N.C., and was selected to the 26-man roster. He has batted .368 with 14 hits, 11 runs scored and four home runs, including a grand slam in a 17-1 win over Chinese Taipei.
