Inmate knocks Habersham County jailer unconscious

By Christian Ashliman Anchor/Reporter

A Habersham County jailer is reportedly recovering after being knocked unconscious Thursday night by a jail inmate.

The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. when inmate Mark Edward Roberts, 35, of Cornelia, ran down the stairs in the men’s block of the jail and immediately knocked a jailer unconscious.

The name of the jailer is currently being withheld pending further investigation.

The altercation took place during a time when the men in the block were allowed to be out of their cells, according to Habersham County spokesman Rob Moore.

The jailer reportedly suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville via ambulance. He was released from the hospital Friday.

Throughout the course of the incident, the entire jail was locked down in order to allow officers to focus on the injured jailer as well as the accused inmate. The jail quickly returned to normal operations following the incident.

Roberts was charged with alleged aggravated battery and felony obstruction after the altercation.

The investigation is still ongoing.
