Two-a-Days: D-line, continuing momentum key issues for Broncos

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

here are just 30 days remaining until the kickoff of the 2023 high school football season. But make no mistake, preparations for the upcoming campaign got underway months ago. And teams throughout northeast Georgia already are in full countdown mode.

With that in mind, we spent the last couple of weeks catching up with programs around our area to get a feel for how spring practice went, how the summer is going, and what coaches believe the fall will look like. Our "Two-a-Days" series honors those old-school grinding sessions that lead us out of summer and into fall, asking each area coach two key questions about the state of their respective programs.

Over the next two weeks, AccessWDUN's Friday Game Night will get you prepped for the start of gridiron action with responses from coaches throughout northeast Georgia.

EAST FORSYTH

The Broncos posted their first-ever winning season in 2022. They were just seven points from a playoff spot in a tough Region 8-4A. With several teams undergoing some retooling, and the Broncos returning a slew of experienced players in 2023, could this be the year they break through into the postseason?

That will be the question. However, they have a few question marks of their own on the field as they prepare for what they hope is a historic season. We caught up with head coach Brian Allison to discuss how the spring and summer has come along for his group.

QUESTION: You lost your entire defensive front from last season. How are things coming along as you try to rebuild that unit in a tough region? Who has started to emerge as well?

A: Our defensive line has progressed well throughout the off season. Those guys are working hard. We will be somewhat inexperienced but I feel like they will be fine as the season goes on. Micheal Acevedo, Chaz Calvin, Adrian Reyes, Mitchell Dunlap and Alex Day all have had good summers so far.

Q: Y’all had your first winning season in 2022. How important for the growth of the program is it to continue that momentum this season with an experienced group overall returning?

A: I feel like we have a chance to compete in every game. It would obviously be a big step for this young program to build on last year.  We just need to hold the course and continue to build this program from the ground up.
