The Banks County Sheriff's Office has seized nearly 13 kilos of methamphetamine from two unrelated traffic stops on I-85.
Austin Bond, public information officer for the Banks County Sheriff’s Office said the first incident occurred Sunday, August 27 after a truck was stopped for speeding in a construction zone and following too closely on I-85 Northbound near mile marker 150.
After further inquiry, the deputy found the driver, Anselmo Sanchez-Nava,30, of Gwinnett County did not possess a driver's license.
“Two trash bags were located in the bed of the truck, which contained approximately 10 kilos of methamphetamine,” Bond said.
Sanchez-Nava is charged with trafficking methamphetamine and driving while unlicensed. He also received a written warning for speeding in a construction zone.
The second incident happened on Wednesday, August 30 after a Banks County deputy observed a vehicle allegedly speeding in a construction zone and failing to use headlights in inclement weather near mile marker 152 in the construction zone of I-85 Northbound.
“During the traffic stop, the passenger caused narcotics paraphernalia to fall from the vehicle,” Bond said.
Further investigation located nearly 3 kilos of methamphetamine. Wesley Rhom, 65, and Sheila Rhom, 58, both of Mariom, North Carolina were arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine.
Additionally, Sheila was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of a drug-related object.
Wesley received written warnings for a headlight violation and speeding in a construction zone.
