Softball: No. 1 Buford, No. 2 Jefferson continue to roll in region play

JEFFERSON, Ga. — Jefferson scored eight runs in the fourth inning to finish off a wild 20-8 win over Clarke Central on Tuesday in Region 8-5A action.

The Class 5A second-ranked Lady Dragons (12-2, 7-1 Region 8-5A) actually trailed 4-0 after the Gladiators plated four runs in the top of the first. Jefferson pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the first.

After Clarke Central had pushed its lead to 6-3 in the top of the second, Jefferson answered again, scoring five in the second to tak an 8-6 lead and added on with four more in the third.

Clarke Central pulled back within 12-8 in the fourth before the Lady Dragons put it away.

Audrey Burton and Jenna Rappa both had four hits and drove in five runs. Burton cranked a pair of home runs and Rapp had two triples in the game. Gillian Price also had four hits and two RBI as Jefferson pounded out 22 hits in the game.

The Lady Dragons will travel to Loganville on Thursday for another big Region 8-5A game.

Sophomore Caroline Stanton pitched her second perfect game of the season on Tuesday as the Class 7A No. 1-ranked Lady Wolves cruised to an easy three-inning, Region 8-7A win on the road.

Stanton (7-0) struck out four batters.

The Wolves (14-0, 5-0 Region 8-7A) pounced on the Bears quickly with nine runs in the first inning. They added four in the second and three in the third to invoke the mercy rules. 

Senior Mackenzie Pickens got the hit parade going with a two-run homer in the first. She would add another one later in the game as did senior Adriana Martinez and sophomore Summer Castorri.

Stanton also did her part at the plate, belting a solo homer to lead off the third inning.

Buford next heads to Mill Creek on Wednesday in another Region 8-7A showdown.
