JASPER, Ga. – A 28-0 halftime lead was more than enough for Lumpkin County as they opened 7-3A play with a 49-14 win over Pickens Friday night.
Cal Faulkner accounted for three touchdowns, starting with a passing score as he opened the game with an 18-yard pass to Nolan Matthews for an early 7-0 lead. After Mason Sullens sprinted 60 yards to double the lead, Faulkner used his legs to scamper 14 yards for a 21-0 lead early in the second period.
Sullens found the endzone again just before halftime from three yards out before Pickens finally got on the board in the third quarter. After Sullens again rushed for a 3-yard touchdown to stretch the lead back out to 28 points, Faulkner finished his night with an 8-yard rushing touchdown that pushed the score to 42-7. Jackson Bell scored the Indians' final touchdown late in the game.
Faulkner finished with 212 yards of total offense, 133 of which came through the air on 13-of-23 passing. Sullens had 179 yards on 26 touches.
The Indians, now 1-0 in region play, will match up with Wesleyan next week in Dahlonega.
