Football: Key region matchups headline radio coverage

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

As we head into the second half of the high school football season, the region standings will continue to take shape.

Week 6 say North Oconee take another step toward a home playoff berth with a win over Cherokee Bluff. Jefferson proved they are the team to beat in Region 8-5A with a win over Clarke Central. Lumpkin County continued to dominate in the Region 7-3A opener. Buford's offense keeps getting better each week as they head into the Region 8-7A opener.

Region 8-2A and Region 8-A D1 and D2 begin action this week with some very interesting opener.

Week 7 has several big region games on the schedule, and three of those showdowns are on the Jacobs Media airwaves and streaming live on AccessWDUN.com.

East Hall at East Forsyth –. If East Hall is going to have a chance to win this game, the Vikings will have to be better on offense. They had opportunities against Cedar Shoals last week but low offensive production led to the loss. As for the Broncos, they shut out Walnut Grove last week but struggled a bit on offense. This game could either be a defensive battle or a potential shootout. If it is a shootout, East Forsyth as the upper hand. You can listen to the game on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live).

North Oconee at North Hall – North Oconee is North Oconee. They were the preseason favorite and still are the favorite to win the region. They've rolled in Region 8-4A play and are tough on both sides of the ball. North Hall has proven they can score, averaging over 40 points per game. The Titans will be the toughest test yet for the Trojans. If the Trojans can keep it close, they could have a chance to shock the state. However, nobody has kept it close with the Titans. You can hear the game on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live).

Lanier at Gainesville – Some believe Lanier is the team in Region 8-6A to beat Gainesville. However, they struggled in the first half against Habersham Central before pulling away. Big Red comes into the game with two weeks rest after blasting Apalachee two weeks ago 70-3. If the Red Elephants offense picks up where it left off in Week 5, the Longhorns will be in trouble. If the Red Elephants allow Lanier to hang around, this game will be a barn burner. The game can be heard live on FM 94.5 The Lake (Click to listen live).
