Two Atlanta teens have been arrested in Gwinnett County in connection to the overdose death of a 16 -year-old girl.
The Gwinnett County Police Department arrested Dino Runar Bonasera,17, on charges of felony murder, aggravated involuntary manslaughter by causing fentanyl overdose death, sale of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and use of a communication facility in commission of a felony involving controlled substances.
Meanwhile, a 16-year-old juvenile was also arrested and will be charged as an adult. She faces charges of felony murder, aggravated involuntary manslaughter by causing a fentanyl overdose death, sale of a controlled substance and use of a communication facility in commission of a felony involving controlled substances.
GCPD said in a release that the enactment of Austin’s Law in April 2024 has led to seven individuals being charged with Aggravated Involuntary Manslaughter. The law aims to hold those allegedly involved in drug-related deaths accountable. Austin’s Law carries a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The agency has seen a 30 percent decrease in fatal overdoses this year, according to the release.
GCPD reminded the public that anyone who seeks medical help in good faith for someone experiencing a drug overdose will not be arrested, charged, or prosecuted for drug-related offenses that arise solely from seeking assistance.
