Football: Region 8-5A has some crazy playoff scenarios

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

If you don't have a headache now, you will when you're finished reading the Region 8-5A playoff scenarios.

Some folks enjoy figuring out how many points a team has to win by to win the region, finish ahead of the other team, or just jump into the top 4.

Take Region 6-3A, for example. Yeah, that's all we're saying about that here. It's crazy, too. Want to read about that region? CLICK HERE.

After reviewing Region 8-5A, the only certainty is that Jackson County cannot win the region, but Winder-Barrow can with some help.

Now, consider that all contests versus Apalachee in the region do not count toward the region standings. So, if you're looking at MaxPreps, you might get confused.

Here are the standings heading into Week 12:

1. Clarke Central (4-0)
2. Jackson County (3-1) lost to Clarke Central 27-11
3. Winder-Barrow (3-1 lost to Jackson County 27-10
4. Habersham Central (2-2) lost to WB 57-43 and Clarke Central 42-28
5. Alcovy (0-3)
6. Loganville (0-3)

Week 12 matchups in Region 8-5A: Loganville travels to Alcovy. Habersham Central hosts Jackson County, and Clarke Central travels to Winder-Barrow.

Based on the results from Week 12's action, there are six possible scenarios, so grab some Advil and enjoy.  Oh, and a special thanks to the Region 8-5A coaches for helping us out with the scenarios below.

Scenario 1:
If Clarke Central and Jackson County win...
1. Clarke Central (5-0)
2. Jackson County (4-1)
3. Winder-Barrow (3-2)
4. Habersham Central (2-3)

Scenario 2:
If Winder-Barrow and Habersham Central win ...
1. Winder-Barrow (4-1)
2. Clarke Central (4-1)
3. Habersham Central (3-2)
4. Jackson County (3-2)

The two-way tie is broken in this scenario because Habersham Central beat Jackson County.

Scenario 3:
If Clarke Central wins, and Habersham Central wins by less than 12 points ...
1. Clarke Central (5-0)
2. Jackson County (3-2)
3. Winder-Barrow (3-2)
4. Habersham Central (3-2)

In this scenario, Habersham Central would be the No. 4 seed because of -12 among tied teams. Winder-Barrow finished third because of the loss to Jackson County.

Scenario 4:
If Clarke Central wins, and Habersham Central wins by more than 12 points ...
1. Clarke Central (5-0)
2. Habersham Central (3-2)
3. Jackson County (3-2)
4. Winder-Barrow (3-2)

In this scenario, there would be a three-way tie with Habersham Central, Jackson County and Winder-Barrow, with all +12. Winder drops to fourth because of its three-point win over Loganville, and Habersham Central gets the No. 2 seed because of its win over Jackson County.

Scenario 5:
If Jackson County wins, and Winder-Barrow wins by less than 12 points...
1. Clarke Central (4-1)
2. Jackson County (4-1)
3. Winder-Barrow (4-1)
4. Habersham Central (2-3)

In this scenario, Winder-Barrow drops to third because of its -12 win over Clarke Central, and Jackson County is eliminated from the top spot because of its loss to Clarke Central.

Scenario 6:
If Jackson County wins, and Winder-Barrow wins by more than 12 points ...
1. Clarke Central (4-1)
2. Jackson County (4-1)
3. Winder-Barrow (4-1)
4. Habersham Central (2-3)

Winder-Barrow is No. 3 in this scenario due to -3 win over Loganville. Jackson County gets the No. 2 seed because of a loss to Clarke Central and beats Habersham Central by three or more. If Jackson County loses by two or less, Winder-Barrow would jump over Jackson for the No. 2 seed, Winder-Barrow No. 3, and Habersham Central would be fourth.
