Mount Airy man shot by police after Sunday crash in Cornelia

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

State officials are investigating after a Mount Airy man was shot by police following a crash in Cornelia Sunday evening.

The Cornelia Police Department announced Sunday night that they had requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigations for an officer-involved shooting that happened around 5:50 p.m. near the intersection of Level Grove Road and Irvin Street.

An initial report released Monday by the GBI said the incident started when officers were called to a report of a vehicle crashing into a building.

"The caller said that someone drove their SUV into a business on Irvin Street," the GBI's release Monday said. "A Cornelia Police Department officer responded to the location and found a SUV that had crashed through the front of a business. The driver of the car was identified as Christian Drake Shurtleff, age 33."

Investigators say Shurtleff's seven-year-old daughter was also in the car, but was safely removed without injury. Shurtleff reportedly became combative with officers responding to the scene and started fighting. During that fight, an officer reportedly shot him.

Shurtleff was taken to a nearby hospital and treated. The GBI says he is facing charges of felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer with additional charges pending.
