A Gainesville man has been arrested after a woman injured in a crash he was involved in died Monday.
Hall County Sheriff's Office officials said Tuesday that Joshua Rene Castaneda, age 33, was arrested at his home on Gould Drive Monday afternoon, hours after the death of Frankie Smith Shoemake, age 82, also of Gainesville.
Shoemake was injured when the 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser she was a passenger in was hit by Castaneda's 2008 GMC Yukon at the intersection of McEver Road and Gould Drive on October 30. The sheriff's office said Castaneda was turning left from the southbound side of McEver Road onto Gould Drive when he hit the Cruiser, which was going north on McEver Road.
Castaneda allegedly fled the accident on foot before turning himself in to the Hall County Jail the following morning. He was initially charged with hit and run, failure to yield and driving while unlicensed and was released on just under $3,000 bond the same day. He was then arrested at his home Monday after Shoemake's death.
Castaneda remained in the Hall County Jail without bond as of Tuesday afternoon on a charge of first-degree vehicular homicide.
