White County Fire services reminded the public to prioritize chimney safety after crews responded to a chimney fire in Cleveland Wednesday morning.
White County Fire Rescue and the Cleveland Fire Department were called to a home on the 200 block of Warwick Rd. just after 9 a.m. on Nov.13. Once first responders arrived on the scene, they were able to determine the fire was contained to the chimney. The flames were extinguished and no injuries were reported.
WCFR said prior to starting their first fire of the winter season, residents should follow their chimney safety tips to prevent similar incidents:
1. Have Your Chimney Professionally Inspected and Cleaned – Creosote, a highly flammable byproduct of wood burning, can accumulate in your chimney over time. A professional cleaning removes this buildup, reducing the risk of chimney fires.
2. Use Seasoned, Dry Wood – The department advised residents to only burn well-seasoned hardwoods to reduce creosote buildup. Residents should avoid burning green or damp wood, which creates more smoke and contributes to creosote buildup.
3. Install a Chimney Cap – A chimney cap prevents debris, animals, and rain from entering the chimney, which can cause blockages or damage.
4. Check for Cracks and Obstructions – Examine your chimney for any cracks, gaps, or blockages that could allow dangerous gasses or flames to escape.
5. Ensure Working Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors – Install detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas, and check them monthly. These detectors provide an essential alert in case of a fire or carbon monoxide leak.
