A roadside assistance program is being offered in Georgia and several other states during the St. Patrick's Day weekend.
AAA of Atlanta announced this week that it will activate its "Tow to Go" program starting 6:00 p.m. Friday, March 15 through 6:00 a.m. Monday, March 18. The program will allow callers to request a tow truck to bring an impaired driver and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.
The program is free and available to both AAA members and non-members, although officials noted it may not be available in rural areas or during severe weather.
AAA officials say St. Patrick's Day can be a deadly holiday on the roads, citing numbers from 2020 that showed more than 11,000 people died in drunk-driving crashes on St. Patrick's Day that year.
“We’re proud to be that last line of defense, keeping people from driving impaired,” AAA Auto Club Group spokeswoman Montrae Waiters said. “We also remain committed to educating the public that it’s important to find a safe ride before drinking alcohol or taking drugs. This is critical so motorists are not in the position of having to decide if they’re sober enough to drive.”
Those who wish to use the service can do so by calling 855-2-TOW-2-GO (855-286-9246.) AAA officials advised that the program is intended to be used as a last resort for impaired drivers who don't have another way to reach a safe location.
Tow to Go has reportedly removed over 30,000 impaired drivers from roadways since its inception.
