By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

A now-former lieutenant at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto was arrested earlier this week on charges of sexually assaulting an inmate.

A release Friday from the Habersham County Public Information Office said Russell Edwin Clark, age 62 of Alto, is accused of "improperly touching and kissing a female inmate over whom he had disciplinary authority." The incident allegedly took place in a stairwell of the prison's dormitories.

Clark was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Habersham County Detention Center where he has since been released on more than $11,000 bond. He faces charges of sexual assault against a person in custody as well as violation of oath of office.

The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed Friday afternoon that Clark has been terminated from his position with the prison.
