Fishing boat accident leads to drowning death of a Gainesville man

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

Georgia Department of Natural Resources and investigators in the Hall County area have identified the victim from a Wednesday drowning at Lanier Point along Lake Lanier.

Mark McKinnon of the DNR says Georgia Game Wardens worked with Hall County and Gainesville city emergency officials on the call of a bass boat fisherman's drowning late in the afternoon.

An adult male and his wife were fishing out of a bass boat. When the man tried to sit down in the seat, it became unbolted from the floor and caused him to fall into the water.

The press release from McKinnon's office says the victim, 73-year old Matthew Mayo, did not resurface.  A short time later, Game Wardens were able to use boat-mounted SONAR to locate the subject in six feet of water.

Hall County Fire Rescue was able to use their ROV (Remote Operated Vessel) to recover Mayo's body.

No further details are being released at this time.
