A Mt. Airy man who was already in jail got additional charges after an inmate overdose on Sunday.

23-year-old Cameron Joseph Myers fled from a Habersham County Sheriff’s Office deputy on Saturday near the Walmart in Cornelia and was captured after a brief manhunt.

At the time, Myers was wanted for a probation violation.

When he arrived at the detention center, Myers was placed in the body scanner to check for contraband, but none was found.

Then, at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, detention center staff were notified that another inmate was experiencing a possible drug overdose.

Aid was rendered, and Narcan was administered multiple times before starting CPR while emergency responders were en route.

The unidentified inmate was transported to a local hospital, treated, and released back into custody.

After an investigation, additional charges were made on Sunday on Myers for crossing guard lines with a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance, and possession of drugs by an inmate.

After an interview with investigators, Myers reportedly admitted to smoking fentanyl and bringing contraband into the detention center.

“We take matters like this seriously and work to make sure the inmates in our custody are safe during their time in our charge, no matter the length of stay,” Sheriff Robin Krockum said.
