STATE DUALS: Jefferson wins 3A title, Lumpkin finishes 3rd; Buford falls in 6A title match

LaGRANGE, Ga. — Jefferson came away with its first State Duals title since 2021 on Saturday in the Class 3A championship at Troup County High School.

The Dragons bullied host Troup, 55-15, to capture their 20th overall Duals title.

Jefferson opened the day by taking down defending champ Lumpkin County 45-30 in the semifinals to advance to the title match. The Dragons will take on host Troup, a 39-36 winner over West Laurens, for the title.

Lumpkin County rallied to finish third after the loss to the Dragons. The Indians held off Gilmer 38-35 and then whipped Heritage-Catoosa 52-24 in the third-place match.

In Class 6A, for a second consecutive season the Buford wrestling team went into the finals of the State Duals hoping to do something no one has done in a dozen years.

For the second straight season, the Wolves could not get past Camden County, falling 43-26 to the Wildcats in the championship match of the Class 6A tournament at The Buford Arena.

Buford had moved into its second straight title match with a 60-15 win over Brookwood while Camden routed West Forsyth 68-8 in the other semifinal.

In Class 5A, Jackson County eventually finished in the top four after losing 36-35 to Coffee in the consolation bracket.

Class 5A saw the first major upset as Creekview knocked off defending 6A champ South Effingham, 42-35, at Lassiter to get into the championship match. Jackson County, however, was not able to join them, losing 58-15 to Glynn Academy in the other semifinal. Creekview won the title with a 37-33 over Glynn Academy.

Also in Class 5A in the consolation bracket, Gainesville won its first match, edging out McIntosh 37-36. Big Red’s run ended with a 48-30 loss to Newnan.

Habersham Central, however, was not able to stay alive in the first round, dropping a tough 40-36 decision to Dunwoody.

In Class 2A, Union County eventually finished fourth. The Panthers hammered Glenn Hills, 71-10, and then beat Morgan County, 50-27. They followed with a 48-24 win over Coahulla Creek to climb into the top 6. They beat host Columbus 40-35 before losing 59-18 to Cook in the third-place match.

East Jackson saw its season end with a 40-31 loss to Ringgold in the second round of the consolation bracket.

North Forsyth’s season came to an end in the first round of the consolation bracket in 6A. The Raiders lost 53-28 to Colquitt County.

In Class A, Commerce  began Saturday by beating Elbert County 36-35 in a nail-biter. But the Tigers could not get past Gordon Lee, falling 51-24 to see their season end.
