Soccer: Marquee matchups highlight opening night on the pitch

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

Northeast Georgia area soccer teams will kick off their seasons on Tuesday, with several marquee matchups in store right out of the gate.

Rain is in the forecast but could diminish by kickoff, which is set for 5:30 p.m. for all of the girls' games.

Johnson and West Hall will open with the Battle of Oakwood. The Johnson boys are coming off a Class 4A state runner-up finish in 2024, but the two teams always seem to stage a competitive showdown. Expect more of the same this time around.

On the girl's side, Buford travels to Cherokee Bluff in a showdown of teams that both made the semifinals or better in 2024. The Lady Wolves lost in the Class 7A title game, while the Lady Bears were knocked out last year in the Class 4A semifinals.

Gainesville will entertain Habersham Central to renew their annual battle, and Jefferson and Jackson County will battle for Jackson County supremacy at Memorial Stadium.

(See below for the full schedule of Tuesday's games.)
