By Hamilton Keener Anchor / Reporter

Barrow County and Winder authorities rescued an Infant from a Tuesday afternoon apartment fire in Winder.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at around 1:15 p.m. to the scene near Apperson Drive to assist the Winder Police and Fire Departments.

Deputies were informed that an infant was trapped inside the apartment and could not be reached due to heavy smoke.

A Barrow County deputy and a Winder Police Officer crawled through the building, following the sound of the infant’s cries, and successfully rescued the child.

The infant, two other children and several law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation. They are all expected to recover.

"We are incredibly grateful for the swift and coordinated actions of our local teams. Their quick response ensured the fire was contained to the room of origin and that lives were saved," Winder Fire Chief Matt Whiting said.

The fire was quickly brought under control, and the cause is under investigation.
