Lanier Tech police: Ga. 365 threat report was due to mistaken internet search

Update published 3:30 p.m. Wednesday:

Lanier Technical College Police officials issued a statement Wednesday afternoon providing more details on a reported threat that later turned out to not be credible.

The school's police department said their investigation determined the call did not originate from the campus as originally reported by other law enforcement agencies. Officials said the cause was a mistaken internet search result.

"The incident's origins stem from an internet search that returned results from an incident from several years ago, which was mistakenly thought to be current," the department said.

The department added that the Lanier Tech campus was never in danger and that students and staff were notified of the incident.

Original story published 12:25 p.m. Wednesday:

Authorities from multiple jurisdictions have said they have found no credible evidence of a threat after a caller reported a shooter along Ga. 365 Wednesday morning.

The Cornelia Police Department reported just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday that they received a report of an active shooter on the highway near Work Ethicon, just south of the Old Historic U.S. 441 interchange.

"Cornelia Police officers are on scene and have confirmed that there is no active shooter in the area," the department said. "The criminal investigations division is working to determine the root of the rumor."

The Habersham County Sheriff's Office reported shortly after that statement by Cornelia police that they also have not found any credible threat. The sheriff's office added that the report of a shooter apparently came from the campus of Lanier Technical College in Hall County.

"A student at Lanier Technical College in Hall County reported to a relative employed by Ethicon in Cornelia that there was a possible active shooter on Ga. 365," the sheriff's office said.

Hall County Sheriff's Office investigators have been looking into the source of the call, and they also confirmed that the threat was not credible.

"When the report came in to us just before 10 a.m., patrol deputies traveled the Hall County portion of the 365 corridor. They found no evidence of an active shooter," a statement from the Hall sheriff's office said.

Lanier Technical College campus police officials also said the threat was not credible, but did not offer any additional information into what led to the reported threat.
