OAKWOOD, Ga. — After seven seasons at the helm of West Hall, Krofton Montgomery announced that he is stepping down as head coach of the Spartans.

Krofton made his announcement on his X page on Thursday morning:

“It is with a heavy heart that I formally submit my resignation as the Head Football Coach of the West Hall Spartans.

“This decision was not an easy one, as the last 12 years at West Hall and 7 as the head coach has been incredibly fulfilling. Coaching this team has been an honor, and l am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such talented and dedicated athletes.

“Watching them grow, both on and off the field, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I want to extend my deepest appreciation to the players, coaching staff, administration, and parents for their unwavering support throughout my tenure.

“The camaraderie, hard work, and passion within this program are truly inspiring, and I have no doubt that the team will continue to achieve great success in the future.

“This was a personal decision and had total support from administration my entire tenure. I will always have a special place in my heart for SPARTA! Again, thank you for the unforgettable memories and for allowing me to be a part of this incredible team and community.

“ONCE A SPARTAN ALWAYS A SPARTAN!”

Montgomery spent his five seasons at The Hot Gates as an assistant under Tony Lotti. He finished with a 17-53 overall record as head coach but was unable to lead the Spartans to a playoff berth. However, twice they finished one-game out of making the postseason.

“Coach Montgomery has been an invaluable part of our school and athletic program,” West Hall athletics director Trevor Catrett said. “It is tough for me personally because we have developed a strong friendship over the past 12 years. However, I know that this decision is what’s best for him and his family. I wish him nothing but the best as he transitions out of this role.”

Catrett also said the search for the program’s ninth head coach will begin immediately.

“With us being on spring break next week I plan to hit the ground running with the search," he said. "I have already been working on things. I have already gotten (some) quality applications and we have quality people on staff as well."
