Jackson EMC Honors Linemen During Lineman Appreciation Month

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

An area energy cooperative group is taking the time to recognize their hard working crews that deal with expansion, coverage, and trouble shooting of their resources..

This April, Jackson EMC (JEMC) has announced they are proud to join utilities nationwide in celebrating Lineman Appreciation Month by recognizing the dedicated crews who power the area's communities.

JEMC President and CEO Chip Jakins says, “Our Jackson EMC linemen are more than skilled technicians — they’re our neighbors, friends, and fellow members. They don’t just restore power; they deliver super-personalized care to every member they serve. They know the families, businesses, and communities they work in — and they treat every outage like it’s happening in their own backyard. Their dedication ensures our members have the energy they need, when they need it — whether it’s keeping a small business running, a classroom bright, or a family’s home comfortable.”

Among the workers for Jackson EMC being recognized during Linemen Appreciation Month is Carl Allen, a lineman serving members in Gwinnett County. Allen has spent more than 20 years at Jackson EMC—and 35 years in utility service overall, and describes the role as both challenging and deeply meaningful. Allen says in a press release, “It takes mental, physical and emotional strength to be a lineman. Mentally, you have to be focused on the job to keep yourself, your co-workers and the public safe. Physically, you endure long hours in extreme weather conditions. Emotionally, you have to be able to miss holidays and events with your loved ones. Being able to restore power for people means a lot to me. Fortunately, my spiritual gift is service.”

Also being honored by JEMC is Stephen Whitson, a lineman based in Jefferson. He adds that the job offers purpose and opportunity. “One of the reasons I became a lineman is for the challenges. There are constant challenges and always opportunities to grow and learn. It also gives me the opportunity to serve others daily. It’s been a great way for me to provide for my family.”

Jackson Electric Membership Corporation, the largest electric cooperative in Georgia and one of the largest in the nation, is headquartered in the Jackson County city of Jefferson. The cooperative serves more than 269,000 meters on 15,270 miles of energized wire.
