The Cherokee Bluff High School Head Boys Basketball Coach was arrested for driving under the influence and speeding near Flowery Branch on March 24.
The Georgia State Patrol reported that a trooper observed Joshua Travis, age 46, driving north on I-985 near Exit 14 at H.F. Reed Industrial Parkway, going 94 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone just after 10 p.m.
According to an incident report from the department, the trooper initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, which traveled from the right lane to the left lane of the roadway and pulled into the median, rather than the right shoulder. The trooper's report said he found probable cause to have Travis perform a field sobriety test.
After doing that test and reportedly refusing to provide a breath sample, Travis was arrested and booked into the Hall County Jail on charges of speeding and DUI. He was released just hours later on a $6,090 bond in the early morning hours of March 25.
Travis has been head coach for the Bears since 2021, recently leading the program to its first-ever region championship in the 2024-2025 season. Prior to taking the head coaching job at Cherokee Bluff, Travis spent two years as the head boys coach at Chestatee High School.
A statement from the Hall County School District said the incident is under investigation, and Travis remains employed with the school system.
"The district is aware of the situation, and it is being addressed by the Human Resources department in collaboration with the school," the statement said. "Mr. Travis remains employed with the HCSD. As this is a personnel matter, we are unable to provide further details at this time."
