Shirley Jean Hamby

Shirley Jean Hamby age 84 of Flowery Branch, GA went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 7, 2020 after a struggle with dementia and three years of declining health.

Shirley was born on July 1, 1936 in Kingsport, Tennessee to Charlie and Dorothy Joseph. She graduated from Dobyns Bennett High school in 1954 and attended East Tennessee State University where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Shirley had two older brothers Charlie Joseph Junior of Williamsburg, Va. and Eddie Joseph of Kingsport, Tennessee (deceased).  Shirley has one niece, Ms. Terrie Statzer of Jonesborough, Tennessee and a nephew, Mr. Steve Joseph of Weatherford, Texas. One cousin, Mr. Phil Robinson of Blountville, Tennessee.

Shirley started working out of collage at the Manuel Clinic in Kingsport in the business side of the clinic dealing with record keeping, insurance and patient billing. After several years at the clinic she moved to the HCA Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport as Business office manager where she spent many years.

She met and married Robert Hamby on September 1, 1984 and after years in Kingsport, Tennessee moved to Flowery Branch, GA with her husband in March 1990. She took a job at the Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville as Business Office director where she worked until the hospital closed.

Shirley enjoyed horses, being around horses and spent many of her early years showing champion quarter horses on horse farms in Saint Louis, Missouri and surround states.

Shirley loved skiing and with her husband spent many years traveling to the ski resorts in Utah, Wyoming and California. She also enjoyed traveling to Dollywood in Tennessee.

Shirley joined the Blackshear Place Baptist church later Christ place church in Oakwood, Georgia in 1992 and was very active for many years in greeting people on Sunday morning and working tirelessly on church outreach and visitation.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
