EDSEL NIX  1927-2020

Edsel Ray Nix, age 92, of Cleveland, passed away Friday, June 4, 2020 surrounded by family and friends.  Edsel will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and as a generous leader and servant in his church, community, and state.   

Edsel was born October 9, 1927.  He was preceded in death by parents, Ollie T. and Ida Hulsey Nix and seven brothers and sisters, Everett, Emmitt, Ernest, Eldon, Elmer, Claudia Nix Martin, and Cathileen Nix Rieker.   Edsel lived all his life within one mile of the place where they grew up.  

He is survived by wife, Audrey Shuler Nix; son, Edwin and wife, Linda Thomason Nix; daughter, Ellen and husband Billy Palmer; grandchildren, Eric and Amanda  Nix and Nick and Mereideth Palmer; great-grandchildren, Adison Nix, Cash Palmer and Braxton Palmer; as well as many nephews, nieces, and friends. 

Edsel Nix’s service to his church remained a priority in his life.  He was a member of Shoal Creek Baptist Church for 80 years.  He was an active deacon at Shoal Creek Baptist Church for 65 years, where he served as a Sunday School teacher for 60 years teaching teenagers thru senior adults.  He also supported the White County Baptist Association and served as its chairman for more than 25 years. 

Throughout his life Edsel Nix was a steward of the land.  He operated a large farm in the Shoal Creek Community.  For 45 years he served on the Upper Chattahoochee Soil and Water Conservation Commission with 44 of those years receiving perfect attendance at the meetings.   As a member he was involved in educating farmers on ways to improve the operation of their farms more efficiently and profitably.  Locally, Edsel worked diligently for citizen access to county water, which is presently at 80 percent. 

Services will be held at Shoal Creek Baptist Church Sunday, June 7, 2020 with Rev. Joe Vernon and Rev. Doug Merck officiating with burial in the church cemetery.
