Shelby Elizabeth Harper

Shelby Elizabeth Harper passed away at home with her husband, Gregory Harper, by her side on October 4th, 2020. 

Daughter to Sherry and Philip Smith, Shelby was born in Wichita Falls, Texas and lived around the US before settling in Atlanta with Gregory Harper, daughter Aubrey Elizabeth Harper, and son Philip Gregory Harper.  After graduating from Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery, Shelby moved on to achieve a degree in accounting from Auburn University.  She spent her early career as an auditor for Citi Group, before leaving finance to focus on her children.  Later she volunteered in her children’s schools, and became a tutor for Georgia Orton-Gillingham Tutoring for dyslexia. It was there she helped dozens of children with dyslexia in the same way she had diligently done for her own children. 

Shelby was an incredibly fun and energetic person who touched the lives of everyone around with her boundless laughter, joy and sense of humor. Above all, however, Shelby was a loving and nurturing pillar of her community.  When she wasn’t changing lives at Orton-Gillingham, Shelby was an active member at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church and close friend to everyone around her. 

Shelby is survived by her husband Greg Harper, her children Aubrey and Philip Harper, her parents Sherry and Philip Smith, and her sister and brother-in-law Lori and Jared Rine.

She will be missed for the vibrancy she brought to all of our lives, for the thoughtful messages she would always send to her loved ones, for her fun-loving personality, and, most of all, for the love that her life exemplified.

Funeral service for Shelby will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 2 PM at Four Oaks Manor, Buford. Pastor Jason Mincey will officiate. The family requests that you arrive between 1 – 1:30 PM for the service and please dress for warm weather. Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2020 from 4 – 6 PM at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel.
