Joseph Walker Carruth, Jr.

Mr. Joseph Walker Carruth, Jr., 86, of Gainesville passed away Friday, October 23, 2020 peacefully at home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Rev. Stephen Wood will officiate. The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Monday, October 26, 2020 from 3:00 -5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 -8:00 p.m.

Born on February 7, 1934 in Cumming, he was the son of the late Joseph Walker Carruth, Sr. and the late Roberta “Bertie” Taylor Carruth. Joe spent his adolescent years in Forsyth County, GA, St. Matthews, SC and Clayton, AL. He was a 1952 graduate of Clayton High School, Clayton, AL. He served in the United States Army from 1953-1957 as Staff Sgt. After leaving the Army, Joe returned to Dawson County, GA where he met his wife, Sara Moore Carruth. They have been married 62 years.

Joe had a career in agribusiness that spanned more than six decades. He officially retired due to health issues at the age of 83.

Joe accepted Christ as his Savior as an adolescent and rededicated his life through Baptism in 1963. He was a proud Christian and a current member of Pinecrest Baptist Church of Gainesville where he served as a deacon, choir member, M & M group member, member of the Young at Heart Sunday school class. He thoroughly enjoyed all the senior group activities and events. He also was a prior member of Chicopee Baptist church where he served in many roles to include deacon and teacher. He was a mentor and friend to many people.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Carruth is preceded in death by his sisters and brothers in law, Ila Mae Carruth Woods (Sam) and Winnie Carruth Livingston (R.V.).

Mr. Carruth is survived by his wife, Sara Moore Carruth of Gainesville; children, Bob Carruth (Lydia) of Concord, NC, Jeff Carruth (Angie) of Clermont, GA, Sheila Carruth Burtz (Chip) of Rincon, GA; grandchildren, Alexander Carruth (Dani) of concord, NC, Ashely Carruth Odom (Caleb) of Polcinega, Italy, Allen Burtz (Taylor), Rincon, GA, Andy Burtz (Jenni) of Rincon, GA, Benjamin Carruth of Honolulu, HI, Mehi Carruth of Kannapolis, NC, Katie Carruth of Clermont, GA, Carrie Carruth of Clermont, GA; great grandchildren, Asher Odom, Zachery Odom, Jameson Burtz, Theodore Carruth, Owen Burtz, Micah Odom; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
