Maynard “Lee” Cain

Obituary Date: Monday, December 14, 2020

The world has lost a great light! Maynard “Lee” Cain, affectionately known as Pa by his family, is now rejoicing with his loving wife, Marie and his beautiful daughter, Jean. His faith has become sight. Lee was such an amazing man who truly loved others. 1 Peter 3:15 describes his life: He revered Christ as Lord and was always prepared to tell everyone about Jesus. He shared the gospel with all, in truth with gentleness, respect and love. Lee will be so missed by his loving family: His son, Ron Cain and daughter-in-law Norma Jean; son-in-law, Doug Faulkner; six grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Donald Cain and sister-in law Sandra, his youngest brother, Rex Cain and Lee’s loving sister Patsy Gearin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maynard and Bertie Satterfield Cain; his wife of sixty years, Marie Lawson Cain; his daughter, Jean Cain Faulkner; sister, Inez Brock and brother-in-law Arvin Gearin. He will also be remembered and missed by his many friends. Ron loves to tell that while fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, the fishing guide said to Ron, “I know a man named Cain from Gainesville, Georgia. You wouldn’t know Lee Cain, would you?” This is only one of the many stories of how it seemed everyone knew Lee.

Lee was born at home in Hall County on June 16, 1927.  When he was born Papa Cain asked the doctor, “How much do I owe you?” The doctor replied, “Five dollars; if it had been a girl I wouldn’t have charged you anything.”  When Lee was seventeen he joined the military becoming a member of the U.S. Army Air Corp. When asked about his service to his country, Lee would proudly tell of how he was a radar operator on Mount Suribachi where the U.S. flag was raised after the Battle of Iwo Jima. He later served his country in the Air Force reserves. For his service, he proudly received the WWII Victory Medal, WWII Honorary Service Lapel Button and Asian Pacific Ribbon. After his honorary discharge from the military, he worked in the Lumber and Building Supply business retiring after 43 years. First working with Lawson and White Lumber Company and later with Parks Lumber Company in Gainesville.

Lee was an active member of Holy Springs Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees and as Deacon for approximately thirty-four years.

A remembrance celebration of Lee’s life will be held at Little & Davenport Funeral Home, 355 Dawsonville Highway, SW, Gainesville, on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m.

The family understands if you do not feel comfortable attending the memorial because of the pandemic. If you cannot attend, you can remember Lee by praying for the sick and those separated from family. For those planning to attend, masks are recommended. Pastor and nephew, Darin Cain and Pastor Josh Chatham will officiate. Interment will follow at Dewberry No. 2 church cemetery, Cleveland Hwy. Gainesville.
