John William Ewing, Jr.

Obituary Date: Wednesday, March 17, 2021

John William Ewing, Jr., age 91, went home to be with the Lord on March 17, 2021.  Beloved husband of Jane (Elizabeth Jane Hutchins Ewing) for almost 62 years, he is remembered as a wonderful father and grandfather, and as a faithful servant of God as a long-time member of the Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas.

John was born on December 23, 1929 in Warm Springs, Georgia and lived primarily in Atlanta for the first 34 years of his life.  While there he served as a Corporal in the US Army, graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in business administration from Georgia State University, and met the love of his life.  He and Jane were introduced in Atlanta, and were married at Jane’s home church in Gainesville, Georgia on June 27, 1959.

A very successful corporate career followed, with John working for 40 years for the HW Lay Company, Frito-Lay, and PepsiCo, serving in many senior positions in human resources after moving to Dallas in 1963.  He retired in 1993 as Vice President of HR at PepsiCo.  He was admired by his colleagues and staff throughout his career as a caring and exemplary leader, and a pioneer in his field.

Perhaps John’s favorite avocation was mowing pastures at his ranch in North Texas.  One of the family’s favorite images and memories of him is high atop his old Massey Ferguson tractor!

John passed away peacefully at his second home in Arlington, Virginia, and is survived by wife Jane, children Mark Ewing (and wife Carla) and Carol (Ewing) Elliott (and husband Todd), grandchildren Clark, Blake, and Julia Elliott, and Claire and Myla Ewing.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John William Ewing, Sr. and Thelma (McLendon) Ewing, his dear first cousin Sylvia Jordan Hunt, and infant grandson Lance William Ewing.

A private family graveside service will be held in Georgia.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in John’s name to the Dallas Arboretum or the Park Cities Baptist Church General Fund.
