Mildred Ann Turk Simons

Mildred Ann Turk Simons, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, March 20, 2021.  She was a resident of Lanier Village Estates and previously lived in Athens where her husband was a professor at The University of Georgia.
Locally, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church Gainesville where she was involved in Presbyterian Women, Prime Time Singers, preparing food for Good News at Noon and creating hand made items with the “Wonderful Works” group.
     In Athens she was active at First Presbyterian Church where she was an elder and sang in the choir.  She was a member of PEO philanthropy sorority, Garden Club, University Women’s Club and was a season ticket holder for the Georgia Bulldogs for more than 40 years.  She directed the preschool at Central Presbyterian Church and worked on the UGA campus for many years.  She faithfully supported the School of Music where she established a graduate scholarship in music education, named for her husband, Dr. Gene Simons.
     Prior to living in Athens, Mickie and Gene lived in Tallahassee, FL where he received his PhD from Florida State University, then served on the faculty.  Their early years were spent in Indiana where they both taught music in schools and she taught piano lessons.
     Born in Bardwell, KY, she later attended Murray State University where she received a degree in music with piano as her major instrument.  She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, Malcolm and Penelope Turk, sister, Naomi Turk Rushton, and brother, Malcolm K Turk, Jr.
     Mickie is survived by her daughters Ellen Kaye (Bob) Cagle of Marietta and Janet Lynn (Jerry) Reeves of Gainesville, five grandchildren, Ann Purcell, Carter Reeves, Peyton Reeves, Ellen Bush and Clinton Reeves.  She had nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and a nephew.
     A celebration of her life will be Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church Gainesville, GA.  In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Music Ministry at First Presbyterian Church, 800 Enota Ave., Gainesville, GA. 30501.  The service will be available on the church website:  http://fpcga.org, then click Livestream.
