Mary Margaret Slaton

Mary Margaret Slaton, nee Morgan, born April 13, 1940, passed away October 4, 2021.  She was born in Navarro, Texas, to the late T.H. and Ethel Morgan, who preceded her in death, as well as her brother, Bobby Morgan, and her sister, Alice Loomis. 

Mary retired from the Banks County School System where she taught high school English.  Known by her students as “mama Slaton,” Mary inspired and encouraged them to always be their best.  She attended both Piedmont College and the University of Georgia.  In addition to loving to spend time with her family and friends, Mary enjoyed:  cooking, baking, crocheting, caring for her many plants, playing cards and board games, The Hallmark Channel, and game shows.  One of her greatest joys was traveling to Georgia to spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Mary had a sweet personality, was fun-loving, caring and truly enjoyed helping people.  She loved life and made friends everywhere she went.  Mary was very much loved and was a blessing to everyone who knew her.

Mary is survived by her sons, Keith Slaton, Georgia, and Todd and his wife, Julie Slaton of Texas; grandchildren, Mandy (Justin) Sullens, Jill (Wesley) Cash, Ashley and Mitchell Slaton, Rachel Slaton and Bobby Bowen; great grandchildren, Lucy Sullens, Annie Cash, Reece and Rhett Emerson; and very special cousin, Betty Lou Higginbotham, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  She will be truly missed by all!

A memorial service will be held at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Lula, GA on Sunday, October 10 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Scott Smith (former student) and Kelly McDuffie (former teacher) speaking.  All former students, friends, and family are invited to attend.

Graveside services will be held in Purdon, Texas, at a later date.
