Lt. Colonel (U.S. Army Ret) William E. (Bill) Mundy

Lt. Colonel (U.S. Army Ret) William E. (Bill) Mundy, age 91, of Dahlonega, passed away Monday, November 8, 2021 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Dahlonega Campus following a sudden illness.      

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2021. Dr. Steven Wright will officiate. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Colonel Mundy was born September 15, 1930 in Tampa, Florida to the late Robert E. and Frances P. Mundy. The family moved to Colquitt, Georgia when he was a child, and there he grew up. Colonel Mundy Graduated Class of 1952 from North Georgia College, where he received a Major in BS Physical Education/History. He was awarded the 1951-1952 Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges. 

He served his country with honor in the U.S. Army for 25 years as an Infantry Officer with wartime service in Korea and two tours in the Vietnam War. While there, he was stationed at Chi Lang Facility near the Border of Cambodia. Tours included the Canal Zone, Central America; Fort Benning, Georgia – Infantry; Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland – Inspector Generals; Jefferson Proving Grounds, Indiana – Logistics.

His awards include Combat Infantry Badge with star, Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with cluster and Meritorious Service with cluster.

After retirement, he worked with the Department of Corrections, and worked there from 1979 until retirement in 1995. In his 16 year career he held positions as Probation Officer I, Probation Officer II, Intensive Probation Supervisor (One of the original 13 teams formed), Chief Probation Officer, and Superintendent at IW Davis Detention Center and Gainesville Detention Center. He was awarded the distinguished Employee of the Year Award from the Department of Corrections in 1993 and the Community Corrections Upper Lever – Manager of the Year Award in 1993. Upon retiring from the Department of Corrections, he did consulting work with/for Georgia Probation Management, Inc.

Colonel Mundy held the positions in Lumpkin County; he was an original member of the Dahlonega/Lumpkin County Fire Commission, along with Dr. William D. Bellamy and then County Commissioner JB Jones. A former Board of Control – Community House; served as deputy Coroner of Lumpkin County for 6 years and served as Associate Magistrate of Lumpkin County for 4 years and 7 months with then Magistrate Judge of Lumpkin County, Jeff Lowe.

Colonel Mundy was a Mason and Shriner and a member of the Dahlonega Baptist Church since 1979.

Colonel Mundy was an active member of the Dahlonega Lions Club having been a member since 1980. He was also an active Lion at the District and State level. He was a strong supporter of the Georgia Lions Lighthouse, having served on the Board of Directors and as a Foundation Trustee. He was a recipient of the Ervin/Crumbley award, the highest honor that the Lions of Georgia can bestow upon a Lion.

Colonel Mundy received International awards; Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow, International Presidential Certificate(s), International Certificate(s) of Appreciation.

Mr. Mundy was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Nancy S. Mundy. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Anne Mundy of Dahlonega and brother and sister in law, Robert P. and JaNae Mundy of Kennedale, Texas.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Benevolent Fund, Dahlonega Baptist Church or the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation.
