Sarah Anne Mewborne

Sarah Anne Mewborne, age 80, of Dahlonega, Georgia died peacefully on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, surrounded by members of her loving family.  

The daughter of the late James Sherman Weaver and Hazel Blanche Weaver, Anne was born in Atlanta, Georgia on March 13, 1941, and grew up in Ocala, Florida.  After graduating from Ocala High School in 1959, she attended Brenau College before transferring to the University of Georgia, where she met Jim Mewborne, her college sweetheart and future husband of 59 years.

After getting engaged during her junior year, she postponed her senior year at UGA to get married and start a family.  Anne made a promise to her parents that she would eventually complete her degree.  After briefly living in Atlanta and Tampa, Anne and Jim settled down in Ocala to raise their family.  Four children and seventeen years later, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and taught middle school language arts.  As a homemaker and matriarch, Anne was committed to supporting her husband, instilling long held family values in her children, and creating a home characterized by love, laughter, meaningful traditions, and hospitality.  She was an exceptional cook, rarely using recipes, and her fried chicken and sour cream pound cake were among the many favorites of her family.

As a devout Christian, Anne’s love of God and faith in Christ influenced everything she did.  She was an admired leader in the church, a trusted confidant, and someone people sought out for Godly advice.  In the early morning hours, she was often found in her wingback chair, with her bible in her lap or deep in prayer.  She loved to sing hymns and praise songs, and when she did her countenance was one of joy.

No stranger to heartbreak, she lost her beloved older brother Jerry when she was just seven years old.  That loss and his memory lived in her heart throughout her life.  When her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and her father began to battle dementia, she left her role as a teacher to commit herself to their long-term care, eventually moving to a larger home so they could be there too.  

After her parents’ deaths, she started a new chapter by working with Jim at the Jiffy Store in Anthony where her sense of hospitality was quickly noticed and appreciated by all the customers.  She baked homemade chocolate chip cookies and made everyone who came through the door feel welcomed.  They later sold the Jiffy Store and opened a Pak Mail franchise in Ocala, where they worked together until retirement and relocation to Gainesville, Georgia, not too many miles from where they first met so many years earlier.  

To her beloved grandkids, she was known as Grammie.  They brought her tremendous joy in the latter years of her life, and she cherished every moment she had with them.

She is survived by her children Kim Mewborne Strube (Ted) of Blue Ridge, GA, Pat Mewborne Baudin (Brett) of Gainesville, GA, Jay Mewborne (Stacy) of Tavares, FL, and Jack Mewborne (Rebecca) of Raleigh, NC; sister Mary Ashley Hayes of Tierra Verde, FL; nephew Dan (Sally) of Tierre Verde; and fourteen grandchildren, all of whom she adored. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Mewborne; parents Jim and Blanche Weaver; and brother Jerry Weaver.
