Charles A. Bythewood

Charles A. Bythewood, age 88, of Cumming, Georgia, the beloved husband of Lorraine Bythewood, passed away on June 9, 2022 at AccentCare Hospice & Palliative Care Center in Cumming, Georgia. He was born in Manhattan, New York, the second child to the late Christopher P. Bythewood and Edna Bythewood. Charles grew up in Harlem with his brother Christopher. He later moved to Hempstead, Long Island in 1944, at 10 years of age when his younger brother, David, was born. Two years later, the family was blessed with his brother, Daniel.  

He served in the U.S. Army as a Division Commander and Captain at Fort Dix, Fort Sam Houston and the Boston Army Base. His profession was Dentistry and was self-employed as a General Practice Dentist from 1963 to 2013. He joined the Stoneybrook University faculty as a Professor in their School of Dentistry. He loved serving the community, teaching his students and helping his patients.

Charles met the love of his life, Lorraine, at Hempstead High School where they both played in the Orchestra. He played Clarinet and Lorraine played Violin. They truly enjoyed making music together and were married for 63 years. Their marriage produced two daughters, Debra and Susan and one son, Charles E.

Charles received a bachelor's degree from Hofstra University in 1956. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) Degree in 1960 from Howard University and a Certificate in Forensic Dentistry from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in 1979.

Dr. Bythewood, known as “Doctor B” was a member of the American Dental Association, the New York State Dental Society, and served on the Board of Directors, the Hospitality Committee, Legislation Committee, Publications Committee and Board of Delegates for the Nassau County Dental Society. Additionally, he served as a Career Day Lecturer, and was on the Malpractice Liability Committee for 12 years and on the Human Research Review Committee at Mercy Hospital Medical Center for 15 years.                              

Charles was an avid reader, singer and sailor. He loved singing with the Long Island Choral Society and the Long Island Philharmonic Chorus. He was a gentle, honest, extremely intellectual, deeply religious man of incredible integrity. He had a deep love for God, his church, his wife, his family, his friends and classical music. Charles made an immediate and lasting impact on anyone who met him. He was a man with a wealth of wisdom. He dedicated his adult life to serving his clients, the church and had a "take-one-day-at-a-time" approach to life, trusting in God. He never bragged about himself, but only of his wife, family and friends. He was the rock of our family and he will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

He is survived by his children, Debra, Charles and Susan and his wife, Lorraine. Also survived by his grandchildren: Jacleine, Jonathan, Cameron, Charlotte, Heather Grace, and Ariana. His great grandchild: Anaiyah. Additionally survived by his brothers, David and Daniel as well as his son in-laws Randy and LeDale.

Friends are invited to attend his funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday, June 13 at Saint Columba’s Episcopal Church at 939 James Burgess Road, Suwanee, Georgia 30024. Interment will follow at the Georgia National Cemetery at 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, GA 30114.
