Marion Iversen Waaland, 95, passed away on June 2, 2022 at her home with her loving family by her side. Marion was born August 17, 1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Einar Pahr and Minnie Iversen of Stavanger, Norway. She attended Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. At 15 years of age, she was introduced by family to the love of her life Arthur T. Waaland, whom she later married on November 24, 1945. She worked tirelessly with pride and a dedication to all the values that she and her husband held dear as a career USAF officer’s wife. Multiple locations ensued and she adjusted and excelled at her responsibilities as hostess to dignitaries, charitable organizations, as well as on behalf of her son’s extra-curricular activities throughout his education. A prestigious military assignment to New Zealand for her husband created additional support and service responsibilities for Marion as she navigated living and performing her military officer’s wife’s obligations while overseas. With each new transfer, Marion created lifelong friendships. In 1970, Marion moved with her husband to Tucker, Georgia where she served as office manager for the newly established family-owned business. In March of 1973, she earned her license as a real estate agent and began her residential sales career with Harry Norman Real Estate in Dunwoody, Georgia. She later joined in partnership with Byers’ Realty continuing to successfully concentrate on the sale of residential properties. After retiring from real estate, Marion remained active in her community. In 1996, together with her husband she helped supervise the construction of their home in Buford, Georgia. She again remained active and involved in this new community’s events. In 2020, health issues forced her to give up her independent living and move in with her son and daughter-in-law where she continued to travel with family and enjoy life. Marion is survived by her son Art (Marilyn), of Buford, Georgia, sister-in-law, Sonja Waaland Moran (Ed), of Daniel Island, South Carolina, and scores of devoted nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 59 ½ years Arthur T. Waaland and her brother-in-law, Irving Waaland. While her distinguished careers and community services helped to define her, Marion’s legacy will be that of matriarch of a family she loved dearly and who in turn dearly loved and admired her.
A memorial service will be held on June 25, 2022 at 2:00 pm, in the chapel of Flanigan’s Funeral Home, Buford, Georgia. She will be buried with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA with date to be determined. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
