Joseph Wayne Braswell

Joseph Wayne Braswell was born on January 7, 1947 in Metter, GA to Doc (Wilbur) and Geri Braswell of Gainesville, GA.

He attended college at Georgia Southern University, earning degrees in Music Education and Accounting.

Wayne married Jan Thomas (Rainwater) of Cumming, GA and they have two daughters: Perrie Lane Tatum (Zach) and Laure Braswell Young. He had four grandchildren: Merrie and Gracie Young and Hazel and William Tatum. Wayne married Kathie Watson in 2000 and he has two Stepsons: Michael (Heather) Soutouras and Nicholas Soutouras. He also leaves behind one grandson: Corin Robert Soutouras.

Wayne had a private pilot’s license and enjoyed a number of small aircraft over the years. He flew out of the Gainesville airport and belonged to a variety of organizations, including the EAA. He also had a Miata and loved to go on day trips in the North Georgia Mountains. Over the years, he played his tenor saxophone in many local bands. Spending time with his children and grandchildren could be counted as Wayne’s favorite activity. He never missed an opportunity to celebrate a birthday or holiday and there were many phone calls and Facebook meetings when he was unable to leave the house due to illness. Wayne also spent a lot of time teaching his grandson, Corin, to play the clarinet and bass clarinet and shared with him a love of music.

Wayne will be remembered by his family and friends as a kind man who was always willing to put the needs of others before his own. He had a strong faith which helped him greatly through many years of cancer. 

Memorial services will be held Tuesday July 19, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Rev. Ed Tomlinson will officiate.  A private family burial will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: Lanier United Methodist Church Attention Rev.
