Laura Jane (Wearren) Trammell

Laura Jane (Wearren) Trammell, 85, of Gainesville passed away at her home on Monday, July 18, 2022, with her daughters by her side, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born in south Alabama on December 29, 1936, she was the third of five children of O.U. and Velma Wearren.  Growing up on a farm in Atmore (Robinsonville), AL, she was no stranger to hard work, getting up early to help in the cotton fields alongside her family before going to school each day.  In her early 20’s, Laura met and married James E. Trammell of Clayton, AL, on December 20, 1957.  Moving to north Georgia for James’ employment, the couple settled and built their life together in Gainesville with their two children.  Laura was a homemaker while her girls were young, a meticulous housekeeper, an excellent cook, and loved flowers and working in her yard and flower beds, much to James’ chagrin since he was the appointed digger of the holes for all new plants while Miss Laura supervised!  The couple attended Sardis Baptist Church for decades, but in the early years, were taken under the wing of fellow church member, Mrs. Alene Owens.  Mrs. Owens owned a florist in town, so it was no surprise that once her youngest daughter started middle school, Laura began a career as a floral designer at Alene’s Flower Shop.  After Mrs. Owens’ death, Laura worked at different florists including Jayne’s Flower Shop with the Hulseys and eventually retired with the Satterfield family’s business, Flowers by Opal and J.R.

When not spending time with her family, who she loved more than anything, and being at every Buford football and baseball game her grandsons played in, home and away (no matter the distance), she loved going to her home in Atmore for extended visits.  Anyone who knew her can attest to the fact that she was a diehard Alabama Crimson Tide football fan and knew not to bother her on Saturdays during football season because she would be busy “coaching” a game.  Depending upon how the game was going, you could hear her yelling from a mile away either “Come on, Alabama!” or “Roll Tide!”

Laura was preceded in death by her infant son, James Timothy, her infant grandson, Jonathan Kyle Skipper, her parents O.U. and Velma Wearren, her husband of 57 years, James E. Trammell, numerous other family members and in-laws, all to whom she was close, and her beloved cat Beau Beau.

She is survived by daughters Terry Skipper (Skip) and Deneen Trammell (David), both of Gainesville, GA, grandsons Attorney Blake Skipper (Andrea) and Dr. Zachary Skipper (JoJo) of Braselton, GA, and Jackson, MS, respectively, great granddaughters Victoria and Chandler (with fraternal twins on the way of whom she was not aware but would have been thrilled by the news), siblings Willie James Wearren (Geneva), Rudolph Wearren, Claudine Moore, Wendell Wearren (Lyn), all of Atmore, AL, and numerous other family members and friends.

The family would like to thank both Palliative and Hospice Care of Northeast Georgia Medical Center for their support, Melinda at Precision for being patient while doing her hair and making her look pretty for years, family and friends who checked on her over this past, very difficult year, her cat Phantom for her unfailing constant companionship and love, and a bittersweet yet heartfelt thank you to both the recent Alabama Crimson Tide football teams and to Elvis Presley for saving us the last year of her life as she loved watching recorded football games and especially Elvis movies.  The phrase “Roll Tide” and Elvis were the last bits of memory she was able to cling to.  Elvis always perked her up, often made her want to get up and dance, and never failed to bring a huge smile to her face, and for that we cannot thank him enough for the musical legacy he left behind.  One final thought is a quote from her favorite coach, Paul “Bear” Bryant:  If you want to walk the heavenly streets of gold, you gotta know the password, “Roll, Tide, Roll!”  Laura will have NO problem getting into Heaven!

Funeral services will be held Tuesday July 26, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home.  Rev. Chris Anderson will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Stan Peck officiating.  The family will receive friends Monday July 25, 2022 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
