Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, August 24, at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Memorial Park Drive in Gainesville for Joel Henry Bates, 83, of Gainesville, Georgia. The family has asked everyone to gather at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m.
The family will receive friends and family on Tuesday, August 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Bates was born October 26, 1938, and passed away August 21, 2022. He was born in Madison County but lived in Hall County the majority of his life. He was the son of the late Collier and Edith Dover Bates.
He was a caring husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by his family. He loved his children and two granddaughters immensely, and he enjoyed spending time with them as they grew up. Some of his favorite pastimes later in life were playing sudoku and watching Judge Judy or Investigation Discovery. Despite his declining health in recent years, his sharp-witted and determined personality continued to shine through. His family felt the love he had for them until he went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Bates, and his three sisters, Mary Savage, Earline Bates Spivey, and Helen Nard.
He is survived by children, James Bates and Robin (Richard) Tyner; grandchildren, Courtney Tyner and Amber (Eli) Stuart; brothers Jimmy Bates and Freddy (Pat) Bates; and several nieces and nephews.
