Mr. Richard Dale McDowell went home to be with Jesus, having passed away October 3, 2022 after years of suffering from PTSD and other injuries incurred during his service in the steaming jungles of the Vietnam War in 1967. He was a K-9 handler, scout, tracker, sentry and specialist booby trap mine sweeper going ahead of the troops. Trusting the nose of his faithful friend – his dog! He put his own life at risk time after time in order to safely lead his men into some of the most dangerous battles of the war.
He was a highly decorated warrior, having received the Purple Heart, Bronze Service Star awarded by the United States President. The Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm and the Army Good Conduct Medal.
Richard was born in Alma, Georgia to J.W. Vernon McDowell and Eloise C. McDowell on March 18, 1948. He lived with his family in Flowery Branch. He was a wonderful person much loved by many, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Richard is survived by his wife, Alice Louise McDowell; daughter, Robin & Ted Moon; grandson, Taylor and Kara Thompson; granddaughter, Jaimi & Dusty Edwards; great-grandchildren, William Black, Amelia & Lucas Thompson, and Raena, Aivalee & Skadi Edwards.
