Charles Matthew Sully

Obituary Date: Friday, November 18, 2022

On Friday, November 18, 2022, Sully and beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away. He was ninety.

Born to Henry H Sully Sr. and Mae Wilder Sully, Charles was third among four children. He graduated from Chattanooga High School, received honorable discharge from the Army while serving as a musician, and graduated from the University of Tennessee with an Electrical Engineering degree. While attending college, he met Phyllis “Pat” Roberts and they were married in 1956. They remained married until his death.

Charles is survived by wife Pat and two children Herbie and Carol along with daughter-in-law Nancy Sully and son-in-law Brandon Jakes. Surviving grandchildren are Jessica Sully, Melissa Williamson, Laura Davis, Hank Sully and Brandon Sully, along with great grandchildren Kabir Sully Grover, Adeep Sully Grover, Thaddaeus Davis, and Ember Davis. Other surviving relatives are sister-in-law Ruth Sully and nieces and nephews from now deceased brother Henry H. (Bud) Sully Jr, and deceased sisters Betty Sully Morgan and Lucille Sully Bruckner.

Charles enjoyed playing and listening to music, photography, repair and driving cars, home improvement projects and riding motorcycles. He spent many years designing, building and flying model airplanes into his 80s.  He had a special late-life interest in electric cars. In his early days as a teenager, Charles designed and built two Soap Box derby cars and won the Chattanooga City Race at age 15 with his last car. In his early adulthood he served his community as a Mason in Graham, NC. He was also a member of Presbyterian churches in North Carolina and Georgia. Charles had the reputation of always being a happy man, believed that God alone created the heavens and the earth and all that is in it, demonstrated generosity, honor to his parents and relatives, respected authority, lived soberly and was a help to his neighbors and friends. He dearly and faithfully loved his wife and children. He will be missed.
