Janet “Jan” Elizabeth Westfall Calhoun

Obituary Date: Sunday, November 27, 2022
Janet “Jan” Elizabeth Westfall Calhoun, age 84, resident of Winder, GA passed away Sunday, November 27, 2022 peacefully at home with her children after a very long illness. Jan is preceded in death by her father Francis Harold Westfall, mother Gertha Fred Moore Westfall, husband Ronald “Ron” Calhoun, brother Francis Westfall (Joann), brother Harold Westfall (Jody), brother Donald Westfall (Mary Phil), and twin sister Judy Foster (Laddie). She is survived by her children: Rhonda Bush (Earl), Gary Calhoun, Becki Payiatsos and Stephanie Lunsford (Tim), as well as 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Jan was born in Lafayette, Indiana and was a graduate of Jefferson High School. There she met the love of her life Ron whom she married on May 10,1958. They moved to Georgia in
1972. Jan worked for the State of Georgia in school foods and nutrition and retired after 30 years of service. Ron and Jan had friends that they traveled with and challenged through card games. Jan enjoyed her life. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting and playing bingo. She hosted many parties where she shared her homemade breads, divinity and all the Christmas sweets. Jan was a long time member of Peachcrest Christian Church where she was involved in the ladies ministry. Jan was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for many years. Jan never met a stranger and always made everyone feel welcome. Even as
Alzheimer’s progressed, she continued with her many funny sayings. During her last year of her life, she loved to go on car rides and commented about the nature she saw and every red vehicle that passed. Many trips included eating one of her favorite treats: an ice cream with sprinkles or a cheeseburger with mustard & pickles! She loved sitting on the back porch listening to the Gaithers, watching the birds, or just looking at the beautiful sky and saying “What a beautiful day!” Jan was content with her life and made the best out of every day that her brain would let her. The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers who helped take care of her in her last days. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 12:00 PM at Flanagan’s Funeral Home in Buford, GA. Prior to the service, the family will receive visitors from 11-12 AM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
